On the 17th of August 2011 at approximately 1130UTC a GoAGT team member on board a clients vessel sighted three (3) skiffs in the Gulf of Aden (13 03N, 048 31E). All of the security team members were called to the bridge.
One (1) skiff peeled off and began to approach from the port side, our Team Leader spotted 5 – 8 POB as well as grappling hooks, extra fuel containers and possible weapons.
The skiff continued to approach and at approximately 1500m the team leader requested the ships master to issue weapons to the security team. When the skiff closed to 800m the TL requested permission, from the master to fire warning shots, permission was granted and the TL fired three (3) warning shots into the air.
After the shots were fired the skiff ceased its approach, did a 180 turn and began to withdraw. Our security team monitored all three (3) skiffs until they were no longer a threat to the ship.
UKMTO and coallition warships were informed of the approach.
